Frequently asked questions

What is an Éco-quartier?

Éco-quartier is a program through which the city of Montreal supports the efforts of organizations working at the community level that help local populations take charge of their environment. It is, as such, the cornerstone of Montreal’s initiative toward a greener city. Note that all organizations working under the Éco-quartier banner are completely independent. In short, the éco-quartiers aim to educate the masses on all things environmental.

What is the difference between an Éco-quartier and an Éco-Centre?

The Éco-quartier is a reference center geared towards answering all questions concerning the environment and its preservation. Its goal is to promote eco-conscious habits in order to ensure the continued improvement of the environment.

An Éco-Centre is an area where members of the community can drop off refuse that can neither be disposed of in regular garbage bins or in the recycling blue box. This includes hazardous waste, bulky objects such as household appliances, used tires, building materials, paint, etc. For a complete listing please consult the flyer entitled "Pour recycler plus…les éco-centres sont la!" (in French).

I live in an apartment. Can I still recycle?

In autumn of 2005, the borough of Saint-Laurent began a pilot project integrating recycling in apartment buildings of 9 or more units. This initiative included a total of nearly 2600 units. The project’s mandate was passed on to Éco-quartier Saint-Laurent and will be renewed for the year 2006. It could take several months before the entire region can benefit from the project’s effect, and so it will most likely continue into 2007.

However, residents who wish to recycle can contact us and we will place them on a priority listing.
